They can live for over 3000 years and can resist termites, drought and fire!
The tree's fruits are large pods known as 'monkey bread' or 'cream of tartar fruit' and they produce a dry fruit pulp that is highly nutritious.
The roots can be used to make red dye, and the bark to make ropes and baskets. Baobabs also have medicinal properties, and their hollow trunks can be used to store water. Baobab crowns also provide shade, making them an idea place for a market in many rural villages.
The trunks become so fat partly because they can HOLD WATER! As much as 1000 gallons of water have been tapped from one trunk! BARK = CALCIUM AND ROPE! The tree has reddish grey bark that can grow up to 15cm thick.
There are around 1 million of the trees left!
